This incredibly rare colour shot from GPL’s files was taken by a German PoW who adopted the Anglicised name John Gilbert as he settled in England postwar. It’s a real blast from the distant past – in fact from September 18, 1948, at the inaugural Goodwood Motor Circuit Meeting. I won my first proper circuit race there that day in my Cooper ‘500’. This is Freddie March, the Duke of Richmond & Gordon, the present-day Lord March’s grandfather. Both have made an unparalleled contribution to British motor sport.
