At first sight this is a terrific front row. On the grid here for the 1958 French GP at Reims sit Mike Hawthorn on pole in the works V6 Ferrari (4), with his team-mate Luigi Musso beyond him in the middle of the row, then Harry Schell in the front-engined BRM Type 25 on the far side. Thae sharp-nosed Number ‘10’ is my team-mate Tony Brooks’s Vanwall. Poor Musso would crash fatally during this race. Mike died on the public road in 1959 and Harry’s luck ran out at Silverstone in 1960. Sometimes to study old photos is sobering…
