By 1980 Formula 1 cars - and moreso perhaps their drivers - were not expected to adopt broadside attitudes such as this, captured during the 1980 Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit l’Ile Notre-Dame in Montreal.  The driver of this works-enters Ferrari 312T5 is the irrepressible local French-Canadian star Gilles Villeneuve who would try literally anything to make his recalcitrant car clock a better lap time…  This is a fine example of a single image summing up a great racing driver’s sheer spirit, and it recalls why so many fans adored him.
